WHO ARE WE?

Med-Dogs is a non-profit organization, based in Quebec City, whose goal is to support people who need it in their process of obtaining a service dog. Our mission is to train and accredit dogs, to instruct and provide follow-up to their handler, and above all, to help our beneficiaries acquire confidence and autonomy through their service dog. We offer our services to people with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders or mood disorders, as well as autistic people. For more information on our training program, visit the "Program" section.

We don't have dogs

Our program is based on training your dog. We do not have any dogs to adopt. If you do not have a dog and would like to be part of our program, we will be happy to help you find the right dog for you.

WHAT IS A SERVICE DOG?

Service animals are trained to perform specific tasks. They have been trained in relation to a person's disability and meet the accreditation criteria of their country/state/province. They have access to all public places, even if animals are generally prohibited. They are also entitled to many exemptions from animal laws. Their right to access public places is established by the Commission des Droits de la Personne et des Droits de la Jeunesse (CDPDJ). The most well-known type of service dog is the guide dog for the blind, but there are also service dogs for other conditions, such as epilepsy, diabetes, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorders, to name a few.

Service dogs are a means for people with a handicap to palliate their handicap. They are protected under section 10 of the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms:

“Every person has a right to full and equal recognition and exercise of his human rights and freedoms, without distinction, exclusion or preference based on race, colour, sex, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, sexual orientation, civil status, age except as provided by law, religion, political convictions, language, ethnic or national origin, social condition, a handicap or the use of any means to palliate a handicap.

Discrimination exists where such a distinction, exclusion or preference has the effect of nullifying or impairing such right.”
